Behaviors that I have exhibited and
ultimately developed to keep up with this course are discipline and
accountability. Professor Pryor basically gives us the freedom to handle this
class as if it is a business, and that’s exactly what I do. I must remain
disciplined and hold myself accountable to make sure that I do all of the
required assignments, and just doing the assignments and watching the lectures
is not enough. It’s also a matter of making sure that I declare my points to
receive credit. There’s freedom, yes, but there’s also leeway to fail, which is
why I must remain disciplined.
I’m not an overly social person, so
when I heard that we needed to interview people to get assignments done, I
thought about both dropping the class and not doing the required assignments.
However, I decided to challenge myself and have fought hard to get out of my
comfort zone to do the assignments. What pulled me through was just being confident
and resilient – just knowing that I would grow through my experiences in this
class enabled me to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I do feel like I’ve developed
a tenacious attitude during the past two months, and that’s even spilled over
into my personal life, as I’ve made a commitment to be more active and lose
weight, and I’ve stuck to it.
If I had to offer tips for success for
students in this class, they would be as followed. 1) Maintain discipline –
assign yourself a few days and hours throughout the week to work on the
assignments and watch the lectures of this class. I have a job and take other
courses, so I have to manage my time wisely, but there are a few people in class
that do everything for the class in one day. 2) Read. And I don’t just mean
read for the class, but read books on influential figures that have had
success. I’m currently reading “How to Win at the Sport of Business” by Mark
Cuban, and I highly recommend it. 3) Take care of your mind and body. I’ve made
a commitment to taking care of myself, and it has made me care more about my
professional success, as well. Success is contagious – spread the word to all
aspects of your life.
Jared I’m also not super social and when I heard about the interviews I also wanted to stop then and there, but I agree that doing them has made me more confident. My favorite tip of yours is to take care of yourself. Your health has an effect on so many aspects of your life and I also think that when you feel better you do better.
ReplyDeleteJared,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that discipline and accountability are extremely important to be successful in this class. There is great freedom and no exams to study for, but you must remain diligent. I am a very social person, and I was dreading the interviews! It is hard to talk about an idea that is your own. It opens you up to rejection, and none of us like that! I agree that taking care of yourself helps you do better at everything. If you feel better about yourself, you will be more confident. Great job, and I wish you continued success.
Jared, that's great that your developing discipline outside of this classroom regarding your health. It's a wonderful habit to develop that benefits you all around. I agree that it although this class has much freedom, it is impertinent you stay on top of assignments as much as possible. I sometimes will catch myself waiting til the day its due then finishing it on the graced day unless I plan out my week accordingly. checking out the assignments before hand and making a time line of how long they'll take to complete has really helped me do well in this class.
